How do you host a web page on your own computer?

I don%26#039;t want to spend money to have some one else host a web page for me, I%26#039;d rather host it on my own computer. Do I need a web adress like www.example.com or can by pass this and just simply have my ip adress show up? I%26#039;m new at this and would appreciate some help. 10 points to the best answer of course.

How do you host a web page on your own computer?

Simple enough, first check with your internet service provider. Most providers assign a certain amount of free website storage....usually around 20 megs. If not you can use a site such as freeweb or do a search for free web hosting sites. If you DO have space in your isp account use it! It will be free from popups and advertising. Next comes producing the page. I dont know what all you have for software but if you have front page this is where to start. Your isp may also have website authoring tools and help to get you started. Whatever you choose....after your site is set up it will have its own address. Now for the good part. You do not need a domain name. You can direct people to your site simply by giving them the url or address your site server has given your site. Example, my actual site addy is home.insightbb.com/~trytibbs/freeportpc0...

My domain name is freeportpc.com

you can see by looking that they are one in the same.

I have purchased a domain name to make it simpler for the masses to find. A domain name does nothing but direct people to your actual website. It does however make it easier for the masses to find it. Domain names are cheap these days and can be purchased for as little as 3 bucks a year. Lastly, If money isnt to big of an object you may want to buy some website making software. Its cheap also. I have been using a program called ixla web easy for years and is simplt to use. Drag and Drop convenience! Good luck! You will find it fun!

you need a server but third party hosts are best and pretty cheap. First you need to register a domain name - GoDaddy.com

then you need a host - webhost4life.com

Other Replys:i use piczo.com

its basically www.example.piczo.com

its easy to use, but you work with HTML%26#039;s

Other Replys:you don%26#039;t........ you have to have a web host

Other Replys:The best way would be installing Apache Web server to your computer.

Web: http://httpd.apache.org/

FaQ: http://www.apache.org/foundation/preFAQ....

It requires quiet amount of knowledge to running your own server. So be patient with it.

Other Replys:Why not? you can host your files on your own computer by installing a web server such as Microsoft%26#039;s IIS (Internet Information Service) or Apache web servers. In this case you would have to give people your real IP address as the domain if you have one and people would not be able to browse your computer if you are behind routers and stuff.

I suggest you check the www.no-ip.com which would redirect a custom web address to your IP so if people visit that URL they will be redirected to your computer.

You can also download IIS from http://downloads.microsoft.com and Apache servers from http://www.apache.org

good luck

Other Replys:I assume your using windows.... so something like a wamp server install on it would work. (Windows-Apache-MySQL-PHP)

That gives you everything you need to run a server.

Next youll need a domain name from somewhere like godaddy.com and a static IP address from your ISP. Then you need a DNS server, you can either run your own DNS servers or you can have somebody else provide DNS services for you. A DNS server is what resolves your domain name to your static IP address so that someone can type in your website in their browser and be routed to your server correctly. A good choice would be http://www.directnic.com/

Other Replys:DONT KNOW, BUT SOUNDS INTERESTING
